MAS's 2010 Camping with the Stars
July 16th-18th, 2010

THANKS TO ALL!!!

Thank you to all who worked to make the 2010 CWTS a success. Attendance exceeded last years numbers, despite the weather on Saturday. Special thanks to our speakers and presenters: Bob Kerr, Ron Schmit, Lindsay Emert, Dave Falkner and Steve Emert. Thanks to Dave F. and the B-SIG for hosting the cookout, Bob Young for his organizational skill (again), the entire staff at Baylor Park and especially MAS members & non-members that attended and 'worked' over the weekend.

Also, huge thank you to those who donated door prizes including Radio City, Steve Emert & Bill Bynum for their generosity.

THANK YOU, HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AGAIN NEXT YEAR!!!

2010 Camping with the Stars

The Minnesota Astronomical Society would like to invite you to attend our 3rd annual “Camping with the Stars” weekend. Join us at Onan Observatory for a weekend of camping and astronomical fun. Speakers will give talks on astronomy and what there is to see, door and raffle prizes to be given away, tours of the night sky and of course stargazing. Call the Carver County Park Office at 952-466-5250 to reserve your spot and for registration information.

Schedule of Events (subject to change)
Friday night, July 16

Check-in for campers begins Friday afternoon. Check-in will be at the Baylor Park office. After your checked in and set up, stop by the observatory where we will be starting the weekend with a Star Party beginning at 7:00pm. All Onan public star parties are 'all weather' events. Even if it is cloudy, we will be there to show a video, give a presentation, give a tour of the observatory or answer any astronomy questions you may have. If you are new to MAS star parties, please review the 'Star Party Guidelines'

8:00 – Bob Kerr: 'Solar System on Parade or Welcome to Mr. Sol’s Neighborhood'

This weekend you’ll discover the solar system in the dark skies above your campout at Onan Observatory. This presentation will show you what to look for as the planets and their moons, dwarf planets, asteroids, and other fascinating objects that make up Mr. Sol’s Neighborhood parade overhead. You’ll see many of these through the observatory’s large telescopes throughout the night. Get set to play the “Name That Planet” game and to journey to the outer reaches of the solar system. You’ll also receive a guide describing all the fascinating solar system objects and where and when to look for them.

9:45 – Ron Schmit: ''Satellite Hunting''
MAS member Ron Schmit will be pointing out several bright satellites passing by.

9:45 – Ron Schmit: ''Live Laser Constellations Tour''
Enjoy a live tour of the constellations visible that night using a laser pointer for identifying the stars and how they are grouped together to form constellations.

Saturday, July 17
12:00 Noon – Observatory Opens
The observatory will open by noon on Saturday for daytime viewing of the sun & planets (if clear).

2:00 – Lindsay Emert: “Stellar Spectroscopy”
Wonder what makes up the stars? Their light reveals their secrets. This talk and demonstration will show you what you can learn from emission and absorption spectra.

3:00 – Lindsay Emert: “A Brief History of Astronomy”
Beginning with the ancients, we have always looked up at the sky. A brief history of astronomy from the Greeks through the beginning of the modern era of astronomy in the Middle Ages.

3:30 – Lindsay Emert: “The Moon”
Eclipses and phases and tides, oh my! An explanation for the kids at CWTS of why we see what we see when we look up at the Moon.

4:00 – Dave Falkner: ''A Tour of the Onan Telescopes''
Learn about the three basic types of telescopes we have (Refractor, Newtonian and SCT) and the types of mounts. Dave will describe each of the systems we have set up, the Meade 16'', Visual and Imaging Platforms and the 20'' Dobsonian, covering the ancillary telescopes as well and the purpose of each including the solar Coronado equipment and astronomical binoculars.

5:30 – MAS B-SIG Cookout & Picnic / Supper break
Beginner Special Interest Group (B-SIG) will be hosting a potluck cookout for registered campers and MAS members. If you can, bring chips, a salad, a dish or a dessert and join the feast. For further info, see MAS B-SIG discussion forum

7:00 – Steve Emert: “Robotic Exploration of the Solar System”
Beginning with Sputnik over fifty years ago, robotic exploration of the Earth’s neighborhood has resulted in an explosion of knowledge of our planetary neighbors. We’ll discuss a little of how we’ve accomplished it and what we’ve seen and learned in the last half century.

8:00 – Door prize drawing on the Onan Observatory Plaza (MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN)

10:00 – Steve and Lindsay Emert: 'Laser Tour of the Constellations'
Skies permitting, enjoy a live tour of the constellations visible that night using a laser pointer for identifying the stars and how they are grouped together to form constellations.

Sunday, July 18

8:00am – ''Continental Breakfast'' - Morning coffee & donuts (juice for the kids)
Celebrate the day of the Sun with views through the solar observing telescopes and binoculars at Onan. The observatory will be open throughout the morning and early afternoon. Activities conclude at 2:00pm
