2009 MESSIER MARATHON - March 27th (March 28th alt.)

Saturday, March 28 Messier Marathon at Onan is On
The marathon at Cherry Grove is OFF (attend at your own risk)
FOR LAST MINUTE UPDATES: CALL THE MAS HOTLINE 952-467-2426

Join the fun at the 11th Annual Messier Marathon at the Cherry Grove Observatory, Friday March 27th - weather permitting. March 28th is the backup night. Test your skills finding as many of Charles Messier's list of things that aren't comets as you can, for fun and prizes. See Bill Kocken's posting for a Messier checklist, finder charts & Virgo cluster chart here.

This year, there will also be a marathon at Onan Observatory, where we will have the 20'' Obsession available for use. Dates and rules are the same as the Cherry Grove event. Hope you can join us at Cherry Grove or Onan for the fun.

The night was good over all. We had a good 25 people. The ISS made two passes, but most of us were heads down for the second one. It started with bad transparency in the west. M74, 77, 33, 110 were all almost impossible. I managed to get M74 using adverted-imagination. The sky in the east had a cloud bank that would push closer and then recede over and over again all night long. The middle of the night, about Virgo time, the transparency improved. Saturn really looked nice at this time. We all decided that the small tree just to the south of the observing field must go, it got in the way over everyone at some point through out the night. The light wind kept the dew at bay, although the frost really hit hard at about 4:00am onward. Jeff B had over a 100 objects and I had 90, Bill K must have had near 90. We gave up at about 4:45am. There were only three of us that observed right up to the break of dawn, although there were others sleeping in their car at day beak. It was a fun night.
