Annual Astronomy Day at UWEC
May 3, 2008 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Phillips Science Hall, UW-Eau Claire

Astronomy Day for the Chippewa Valley takes place on Saturday May 3, 2008 on the UW-Eau Claire campus in Phillips Science Hall near the planetarium. The free annual event runs from 10am to 3pm and presents informative displays and activities about astronomy for all ages. The event will be located near the north entrance to Phillips Science Hall. Parking is free on the weekends at UW-Eau Claire, except the metered parking.

Safe viewing of sunspots will be available through a very special "solar telescope", weather permitting. With a solar-filtered telescope, you can safely see sunspots and other structure on the sun. In addition, a radio telescope and receiver will be set up to detect the radio emission from the sun, and even if it is cloudy, radio waves from the sun reach the Earth's surface.

Free planetarium shows will start on the hour and half hour from noon to 3pm, with both presentations and an opportunity to learn more constellations. The regular Children's planetarium show at 11am costs $2 per person, and lasts an hour; the shows after that are free. A display of refracting and reflecting telescopes will help you understand the types of telescopes that are available and the advantages of each. Free astronomy software is available to help you learn your way around the stars, and you can try out some user friendly programs at this event.

Displays of meteorites and astrophotography will also be presented. You can make and launch an air pressure rocket between noon and 1pm.

Astronomy Day also marks the beginning of weekly public observing nights at Hobbs Observatory. Volunteers from the Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society open the telescopes to the public every clear Saturday night from May through October. Hobbs Observatory is located across the road from the Beaver Creek Reserve nature center.

The Chippewa Valley Astronomical Society and the L.E. Phillips Planetarium sponsor Astronomy Day. For more information, contact the UW-Eau Claire Physics and Astronomy department at (715) 836-3148.
